DHAKA, May 02, 2026 (BSS)- Ministry of Home Affairs has instructed the police department to conduct a feasibility study on a dynamic signal management model aimed at reducing traffic congestion in the capital.
The ministry in a letter asked the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to take immediate steps in this regard.
The letter said the government has prioritized plans to modernize and make traffic management more effective to address Dhaka’s chronic congestion.
Under a proposal by the ministry’s Innovation Team, a “Zero Signal Traffic Management Model” has been suggested. The plan covers 105 kilometers of major roads, five along the north-south direction and three others to the east-west axis bringing them under a signal-free system.
The model envisions uninterrupted traffic flow by constructing infrastructure at 37 intersections along the 105 kilometer road. These include overpasses, underpasses, interchanges, U-loops and U-loop interchanges.
Separate local lanes for slow-moving vehicles including rickshaws, as well as pedestrian facilities such as foot over bridges and underpass and walkways have also been emphasized.
In this context, a meeting chaired by the Senior Secretary of the home ministry was held on April 12, involving all relevant stakeholders.
Based on the meeting’s decisions, a technical subcommittee was constituted to determine the steps for implementing the signal management model.
The subcommittee held its meeting on April 19, where short and medium term recommendations were prepared based on the stakeholder input. These recommendations were subsequently sent to the Cabinet Division for further action.
One of the key decisions from the meetings was to conduct a feasibility study on implementing the model across 105 kilometers of Dhaka’s roads under the supervision of the home ministry and by Bangladesh Police.
Abdullah Al Hakkani, Joint Secretary and Chief Innovation Officer of the ministry, has been designated as the focal person for the initiative.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police has been requested to take necessary steps to carry out the feasibility study.
