Ex-Railways minister Sujan shown arrested in July uprising killing case

DHAKA, May 19, 2026 (BSS) - A court here today showed former Railways Minister Adv Nurul Islam Sujan arrested in a case lodged over the murder of one Md Jahangir in the Kajla area under Jatrabari Police Station during the July Mass Uprising.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque passed the order after police produced Sujan before the court and pleaded to show him arrested in the case. Sujan, also a former lawmaker from Panchagarh-2 constituency, was later sent back to jail.

According to the case statement, during the July Mass Uprising, leaders and activists of the Awami League and its associate bodies, along with members of the police, RAB and BGB, opened fire on protesters in the Kajla area of Jatrabari around 3 pm on July 20, 2024.

Md Jahangir, 54, sustained bullet injuries in the incident. He was later taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries around 11 pm while undergoing treatment.

A murder case was filed with Jatrabari Police Station on September 22, 2024, over the incident.

Police arrested Nurul Islam Sujan from the capital's Shyamoli area on September 16, 2024, and he has been in jail since then.
