CHAPAINAWABGANJ, August 5, 2026 (BSS) – Prime Minister's Special Assistant on Environment, Forest and Climate Change Dr. Md. Saimum Parvez today said a national consensus is needed to ensure the trial of fascist Sheikh Hasina.

He made the remarks while addressing a discussion as the chief guest at the Shibganj Upazila Parishad conference room in Chapainawabganj this morning, marking July Mass Uprising Day.

"It is crucial to bring to justice those involved in enforced disappearances, killings and torture. Everyone must work together to build an equitable, democratic and environmentally friendly Bangladesh," said Dr Saimum.

He said that during the tenure of the ousted Awami League government, the country's national interests had been overlooked while priority was given to the interests of a neighbouring country.

In the future, he said, the state must be governed by giving the highest priority to the country's sovereignty, the rights of the people and national interests.

Following the discussion, Dr Saimum inaugurated a tree plantation campaign and tree fair at the upazila premises.

Later, he planted a sapling there and called on all to come forward to help protect the environment.

The meeting, organised by the Shibganj Upazila Administration, was chaired by Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mazharul Islam.

Upazila Fisheries Officer Sanjoy Kumar Sarkar, Upazila Agriculture Officer Nayan Mia, Upazila Livestock Officer Dr Shahadat Hossain, Social Services Officer Nurul Islam, heads of different government offices, teachers, students and media personnel were present, among others, on the occasion.
