KISHOREGANJ, Aug 15, 2026 (BSS) - A doa and milad mahfil was held in Kishoreganj seeking eternal peace for the departed soul of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia on the occasion of her 82nd birthday.

The prayer mahfil was organized by Kishoreganj District BNP at Noor Mosque in Kishoreganj town.

Fisheries and Livestock and Agriculture Minister Mohammad Amin Ur Rashid, Fisheries and Livestock State Minister Sultan Salahuddin Tuku, Textiles and Jute State Minister Md Shariful Alam, Kishoreganj-1 constituency lawmaker Mazharul Islam, and leaders of BNP and its affiliated organizations attended the program.

Mohammad Amin Ur Rashid said former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia was a rare personality in Bangladesh politics. 

"It is difficult to find a second leader in the world as respectable and self-sacrificing as her," he said.

He said she had been involved in politics for a long time for the establishment of democracy and the welfare of the people and had never bowed down to injustice despite facing various adversities.

"She served as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh three times and became known among the people as the "Mother of Democracy" because of her struggle and sacrifices for democracy," he said.

Referring to the national-level inauguration ceremony of National Fisheries Fortnight-2026, scheduled for tomorrow, in Katiadi of Kishoreganj, the minister said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman would attend the event and award gold medals to 14 selected fishers and fish farmers from different regions of the country.

Describing the sacrifices of Begum Khaleda Zia for democracy, State Minister Sultan Salahuddin Tuku said Begum Khaleda Zia had not deviated from her ideals and position despite various adversities in her political life, including the personal grief of losing a child.

A special munajat was offered seeking peace, prosperity and welfare of the country and the Zia family.
