Test batter Zakir fails to make impact in NCL

DHAKA, Oct 26, 2024 (BSS)-Opener Zakir Hasan who was included in the squad for Bangladesh's second and final Test against South Africa failed to make any impact as his side Sylhet are in danger of losing first innings lead against Chattogram in their second game of the National Cricket League (NCL) at Sylhet Academy Ground today.

Zakir scored 13 after opening the innings, as Sylhet reached 114-5, in reply of Chattogram's 198 all out at stumps on Day 1.

While his teammates had already reached Chattogram, the venue of the second Test, Zakir's playing NCL raised a question. Given that his NCL match will end on Tuesday, the day when the second and final Test against South Africa also starts created confusion.

Zakir didn't make room in the first Test, despite being in the squad and it is believed his chance for the second Test's XI is also slim.

But selector Hannan Sarkar said, the BCB could call up any player from the NCL according to its bylaws.

"He is in the NCL now but if we need his service, we can include him in the team at any time. We can do it according to the bylaws," Hannan told the reporters today.

Sylhet, however, is now trailing by 84 runs. Wicket-keeper batter Amite Hasan scored highest 27 for them while Pinak Ghosh made 20.

Earlier, put into bat first, Chattogram rode on Yasir Ali Rabbi's 91 ball-73 to take the score closer to 200. Apart from Yasir, no one could contribute much with opener Parvez Hossain Emon's 34 the second-highest.

Tofael Ahmed and Rejaur Rahman Raja took three wickets apiece for Sylhet.
