DHAKA, June 17, 2025 (BSS)- Galle finally came as savior for Mushfiqur Rahim
who was in the center of criticism after going fifty-less in the last 13
innings, following his epic 191 against Pakistan.
The picture-esque Galle, surrounded by nature and historical forts, was the
place where Mushfiqur Rahim hit a double century as the first Bangladesh
cricketer. His exact 200 in that match in 2013 etched his name permanently in
the country's cricket folklore.
Mohammad Ashraful, the first poster boy of Bangladesh cricket also hammered
190 as Bangladesh posted 638, their highest total in Test cricket still now.
The match finally ended in a draw.
Mushfiqur later played in Galle again in 2017, scoring 85 and 34 in two
innings, a match that Bangladesh lost by 259 runs.
However, this time again when his form is under scanner, Galle saved him as
he ended his fifty draughts with a century. Thanks to his calculative 105 and
skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto's 136, Bangladesh ended with 292-3, recovering
from 45-3 on Day 1 of the first cricket Test against Sri Lanka.
Mushfiqur and Shanto added 247 runs, so far, in an unbroken fourth wicket
stand.
However, the seasoned campaigner took his total run to 424 at Galle after
this 105 that put him in fifth position amongst the visiting batters, behind
Younis Khan, Usman Khawaja, Joe Root and Steven Smith.
His average is staggering 141.33 at this venue, which is best amongst the
batters who batted at least three innings.
No visiting batter, so far, scored 500 runs at this venue with Younis Khan
making highest 497 in eight innings. If Mushfiqur could go in such vain on
Day 2, he could have went past all of the batters who are now ahead of him.
However, Sri Lanka's legend Mahela Jayawardena was the highest-scorer, so
far, in this venue with 2382 runs in 37 innings at an average of 70.05.
Angelo Mathews who would retire after this Test is just behind Jayawardene
with 2206 runs in 57 innings. He needs 177 runs to overtake his predecessor
as highest run-getter at this venue.
