DHAKA, June 28, 2025 (BSS) — Najmul Hossain Shanto’s tenure as Test captain came to an end today after he stepped down from the role following an innings and 78-run defeat to Sri Lanka in Colombo.
The defeat meant, Bangladesh lost the two-match series 1-0 as the first Test ended in a draw in Galle.
Shanto’s big achievement as captain came in last year when Bangladesh swept two-match Test series against Pakistan and that too on Pakistan soil.
If this is the high point, the low point is obviously a defeat to Zimbabwe at home although Bangladesh managed to draw the series by winning the second Test. Under his captaincy, Bangladesh also beat New Zealand in November 2023.
These are the four wins of Bangladesh under his captaincy, making him the second-most of all captain alongside Shakib Al Hasan. Mushfiqur Rahim leads the chart with seven wins as skipper.
Shanto overall led the Bangladesh in 14 Tests, which is fifth most overall. Mushfiqur (34), Shakib (19), Habibul Bashar (18) and Mominul Haque (17) have led in more Tests.
But as far as the average is concerned, Shanto tops the list. He has a win percentage of 28.57, which is the best among all Bangladesh captains who have led in three or more Tests.
As a batter, Shanto also shined with batting during his captaincy stint. He averages 36.24 with the bat in Tests as captain – third highest among all Bangladeshis who have led the Tigers in at least three Tests. Mahmudullah Riyad tops the list with an average of 59.44 in the six Tests he has led followed by Mushfiqur, who averages 41.44.
