LAUSANNE, July 1, 2025 (BSS/AFP) - Spain's two-time Ballon d'Or winner Aitana Bonmati has joined up with their Euro 2025 squad in Switzerland after having treatment for viral meningitis, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced on Monday.

The 27-year-old midfielder missed Spain's friendly win over Japan on Friday in the women's world champions' last warm-up match before the start of Euro 2025 this week.

Barcelona's Bonmati left hopsital on Sunday and is unlikely to feature in their opening game against Portugal in Bern on Thursday.

"And when we thought the day had given all it could," RFEF said on social media.

"Aitana Bonmati rejoins the Spanish team in Switzerland," it added alongside photos of her and coach Montse Tome.

Title contenders Spain also face Belgium and Italy in Group B of Euro 2025.

Meningitis is an infection of the protective membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord.

Viral meningitis is less serious than the rarer bacterial variant, which can lead to death within 24 hours.
