NBR Chairman for increasing operations at Mongla Port for better outcomes

BAGERHAT, July 22, 2025 (BSS) - National Board of Revenue (NBR) Chairman Md. Abdur Rahman Khan today advocated for increasing the use and operations of Mongla Port to avail more benefits.

“If the use of Mongla Port can be increased, then congestion in Chittagong (Port) will be reduced, activities will increase, costs will be reduced and the people will be more benefitted,” he said.

Rahman said this after a view-exchange meeting with journalists at the Sundarbans Conference Room of Mongla Customs House here this morning. 

Upon his arrival at Mongla Port this morning, the NBR Chairman first had a meeting with the customs officials and then had a meeting with C&F agents. Prior to these meetings, the NBR Chairman visited the Mongla Port Jetty.

Rahman said that the government and especially the NBR had been very busy with the budget preparations over the last three months. “Now we want to understand what are the problems exist in the field-level. For example, we want to understand Mongla Port well and we want to understand the facilities at Mongla Port. How much work we are doing here and how much load we can take?”

The NBR Chairman said that they also want to know about the existing problems here being faced by the port users, how to enhance the use of this port and thus taking necessary measures accordingly.

He said the main purpose of his visit was on how to facilitate further the concerned stakeholders at the Port.

Mentioning that the government wants to utilize further the operational capacity of Mongla Customs House, Rahman said that the businessmen should take this opportunity. 

Considering the usage and busyness of the Chittagong Port, he said that the usage of the Mongla Port is very low. 

“If we can increase the usage here, then the congestion in Chittagong (port) will reduce, its operational activities will increase, costs will decline and thus the people will get more benefits,” he added.

The NBR Chairman said that most of the imported cars and vehicles usually come to the Mongla Port while they also sat with the vehicles traders several times to discuss whether more imported cars could be brought through the Mongla Port.

“We’ll sit again and the businessmen will actually get the required services here easily. If the businessmen become benefitted from this, then they should increase the usage of this port,” he added.

NBR Member (Customs Policy and ICT) Muhammad Mubinul Kabir, Member (Customs and VAT Administration) Md. Moazzem Hossain, Mongla Customs House Commissioner Md. Shafiuzzaman, Khulna Customs, Excise and VAT Commissionerate Commissioner, Mongla Port C&F Association President Md. Mosharraf Hossain and other businessmen were present, among others.
