DHAKA, Oct 5, 2025 (BSS) - World Teachers' Day is being observed in the country today through various programmes as elsewhere in the world.
This year, World Teachers' Day is being celebrated under the theme 'Recasting Teaching as a Collaborative Profession,' emphasizing the transformative power of collaboration among teachers, within schools, and across education systems.
According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) website, World Teachers' Day has been observed every year on October 5 since 1994 to celebrate all teachers worldwide.
It commemorates the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, which sets benchmarks regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers, and standards for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employment, and teaching and learning conditions.
Later, the Recommendation concerning the Status of Higher-Education Teaching Personnel was adopted in 1997 to complement the 1966 Recommendation by covering teaching personnel in higher education.
It is a day to celebrate how teachers are transforming education, and also to reflect on the support they need to fully deploy their talent and vocation, and to rethink the way ahead for the profession globally.
World Teachers' Day is co-convened in partnership with the International Labour Organization (ILO), UNICEF and Education International (EI).
As part of the World Teachers' Day celebrations, a reception is being held this morning at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital to honour outstanding teachers.
A total of 12 teachers will be formally honoured at the event, selected from an initial shortlist of 36 candidates representing universities, colleges, secondary schools, madrasahs, technical, and primary educational institutions across the country.
According to the Ministry of Education's guidelines for this year, World Teachers' Day is being observed at all educational institutions nationwide, including at the upazila, district and national levels.
