Fire guts betel leaf gardens in Jhenaidah

JHENAIDAH, May 12, 2025 (BSS) - A devastating fire burnt around six bighas of betel leaf gardens early today at Balarampur village under Niamatpur union of Kaliganj upazila, causing significant damage to three local farmers.

The blaze reportedly erupted around midnight, catching villagers off guard and making firefighting efforts difficult in the darkness. Despite their best attempts, the fire could not be contained in time.

The affected gardens belonged to local residents Bimal Debnath, Samirn Debnath, and Sarojit Pal. All six bighas of their betel leaf cultivation were completely destroyed.

According to the victims, the estimated loss from the fire stands between Tk 6 to 7 lakh.

Victim Bimal Debnath said, "Villagers first spotted the flames shortly after midnight and immediately rushed to douse the fire, but it spread too quickly."

Kaliganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shahidul Islam Howlader said, "If the victims file a formal complaint, legal action will be taken following a proper investigation into the cause of the fire."
