Early identification of obstetric fistula patients underscored

GAIBANDHA, May 22, 2025 (BSS) - Speakers at a function today underscored the need for early identification of obstetric fistula patients and bringing them under treatment facilities to help the government build fistula-free healthy nation by 2030.

Obstetric fistula is curable if the disease is diagnosed timely and the patients are brought under proper treatment facilities, they also said.

They made the comments while addressing a post rally discussion meeting on ‘International Obstetric Elimination Day-2025’ at the conference room of SZRMC, Bogura this noon.

Both Rangpur Medical College Hospital and Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital provide treatment to patients suffering from obstetric fistula.

SZRMCH arranged the function in cooperation with Directorate  General of Health Services in technical support of UNFPA Bangladesh funded LAMB Hospital which has been facilitating the government to find the obstetric fistula patients and bring them under treatment facilities of the government hospitals.

Director of SZRMCH Brigadier General ZulficarAlam addressed the function as the chief guest and deputy director Dr. Md. Abdul Wadud Haque Tarafder and vice principal Professor Dr. Md. Nurul Islam spoke at the event as the special guests while Dr. Bublee Shah moderated the ceremony with gynecologist and head of gynae department Dr. Aktari Hossain Chowdhury Nipa in the chair.

Earlier, the welcome speeches were delivered by project managers of LAMB Hospital MahatabLiton and CilaskBaske and district facilitator of LAMB Hospital Md. Sarif.  

Professor Dr. Ahsan Habib, head of urology department of the hospital also spoke at the function as the resource person.
 
The speakers in their speeches said as the obstetric fistula disease is curable through proper treatment, they underscored the need for early identification of obstetric fistula patients and bringing them under treatment facilities.

In this context, they also emphasized the need for creating much awareness among the common people of the society about obstetric fistula and its proper treatment.

Over 100 doctors, internee doctors and NGO activists, invited persons including journalists attended the program marking the day.
