RANGPUR, July 10, 2025 (BSS) - Three passengers, including two women, were killed and 40 others injured when a passenger bus lost control and plunged into a roadside pond in Pirgachha upazila of the district on Wednesday night.

"The passenger bus was returning to Rangpur from a wedding ceremony in Sundarganj upazila of Gaibandha when the horrific accident occurred at around 11 pm." Pirgachha police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nure Alam Siddique told BSS today.

The deceased were identified as Shanta Rani, 50, of Ward No 12 and Amrita Bala, 80, of Babupara area of Rangpur city and a middle-aged unidentified man.

As many as 30 of the injured persons have been admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RpMCH) and 10 others to Pirgachha Upazila Health Complex.

When the bus reached the Beltoli Bazar area of Pirgachha, the driver lost control while trying to give way to a truck carrying goods coming from the opposite direction.

"As there was sand under the broken part of the road, the front left wheel of the bus slipped and the bus plunged into the pond," said the OC, quoting the primary investigation report.

Upon receiving the information, the rescue workers from the Pirgachha Fire Service and Civil Defense Station rushed there and with the help of locals, recovered the bodies of two women and a man.

Pirgachha Fire Service and Civil Defense Station In-charge Al-Amin said that the injured were rescued from the scene and sent to the hospitals.

"Traffic on the road has returned to normal by last night," the OC said, adding that a relative of one of the victims has filed a case in the incident.
