Man sentenced to death for killing wife in Cox's Bazar

COX'S BAZAR, July 22, 2025 (BSS) - A court here today sentenced a man to death for killing his wife over dowry in Ramu upazila of the district in 2016.

Judge of the Women and Child Abuse Prevention Tribunal-2 Md Osman Gani pronounced the verdict at noon, said Assistant Public Prosecutor Mir Mosharraf Hossain Titu.

The court also fined the convict Mohammad Rashed, 35, son of late Nur Ahmed of Umkhali area under Dakshin Mithachari union of Ramu upazila, Taka 20,000.

According to the prosecution, on July 27, 2016, Rashed attempted to slit the throat of his wife, Bulbul Akhtar, over a dowry dispute. She was critically injured and later died at Chattogram Medical College Hospital the following day while undergoing treatment.

Following the incident, the victim's brother Moinul Islam filed a murder case with the concerned police station.

After examining witnesses and reviewing the evidence, the court found Rashed guilty and awarded him the capital punishment. 

The court also acquitted two other accused as the charges brought against them were not proven.
