Janmashtami celebrated with religious fervor, gaiety in Khulna

KHULNA, Aug 17, 2025 (BSS) - Janmashtami, one of the major religious festivals of the Hindu community commemorating the birth of Lord Sri Krishna, was celebrated in Khulna yesterday (16 August) with due religious fervor and gaiety.

On the occasion, various programmes including colourful processions, discussions, recitation from the Srimad Bhagavad Geeta, performance of devotional songs, vog, arati, mahaprashad distribution and cultural events were organized in the city and district. 

Programmes of the Janmashtami began in the city with colourful rally yesterday afternoon from Golokmony Shishu (Children) Park.

Hindu community leaders, including President and General Secretary of City Unit Puja Udjapan Parishad Shymol Halder and Joyanto Kumar Kundu, joined the programme. Thana Puja Udjapon Parishad and Temple committees also joined the rally with musical instruments, festoons, placards, blowing of conch shells, high-pitched joyous sound and displaying a portrait of Lord Krishna during the rally, and distributed food among the devotees.

Later, a discussion meeting was held at the same venue. Khulna deputy commissioner Mohammad Saiful Islam inaugurated the rally and attended the discussion as the chief guest. Chaired by the Parishad's President Shymol Halder, KMP deputy commissioner (South) Sudorshon Kumar Roy addressed as the special guest. 

Various events and cultural programs are also being held at the Dharmosabha Temple in Khulna city from August 17 to 19 as part of the Janmashtami. 

Earlier, Sri Sri Krishna Puja was held at the Kalibari Para Sarbojonin Puja Mandir at 12:01 minutes on August 16, seeking blessings for the well-being of the people as well as the country.

Besides, a Mongal Shovajatra was brought out on Saturday afternoon at Dolkhola Sri Sri Shitolamata Mandir. BNP's central information affairs secretary Azizul Bari Helal inaugurated the Shovajatra as the chief guest, while former parliament member of Khulna-2 constituency Ali Asgar Lobi, City Unit BNP President Adv. Shafiqul Alam Mona, general secretary Shafiqul Alam Tuhin and BNP's district unit convener Moniruzzaman Montu and Principal of Khulna Shebasram Sangho attended as special guests.

Marking the day, Khulna University (KU) celebrated various programs, including Shovajatra and, discussion meeting. KU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Dr Rezaul Karim attended as the chief guest on the occasion.
According to Hindu mythology, Sri Krishna was born on the eighth day of the dark fortnight in the Bangla month of Bhadra. It is believed that he incarnates in every age to protect the virtuous from the wicked and to establish truth, justice, and beauty in society.

The festival is usually observed on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Shraban or Bhadra.
