RAJSHAHI, July 24, 2025 (BSS) - Large-scale tree plantation is crucial for combating climate change and preserving ecological balance in drought-prone areas, speakers said today at the opening of the Rajshahi Divisional Tree Fair-2025.

They made the remarks while addressing the inaugural ceremony of the 20-day fair held at the Green Plaza of City Bhaban in the city.

The Social Forestry Division (SFD), in association with the district administration, has organized the fair with the participation of various government and non-government organizations, nursery owners, and local entrepreneurs. A total of 70 stalls have been set up at the fair.

The fair is showcasing a wide variety of tree saplings, including fruit-bearing, timber, and medicinal plants. It aims to promote tree plantation, raise environmental awareness, and highlight the benefits of social forestry programs.

Speakers at the inaugural session stressed the importance of social forestry, which involves community participation in tree plantation and forest management, to ensure long-term environmental sustainability.

Commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) Muhammad Abu Sufiyan, Conservator of Forest Subedar Islam, and Divisional Forest Officer Rafiquzzaman Shah addressed the opening ceremony as special guests.

Deputy Commissioner Afia Akhter presided over the function.

Speaking on the occasion, RMP Commissioner Abu Sufiyan said optimum afforestation is crucial for preventing environmental and biodiversity degradation and for making the country a safe and livable place for future generations.

The fair will remain open to the public from 8 am to 9 pm every day until August 12.
