LAKSHMIPUR, Oct 4, 2025 (BSS) - The Meghna River in Lakshmipur area today
witnessed no fishermen in catching fishes as the Fisheries Department is
conducting a campaign in the river to implement a 22-day ban to preserve
Jatka for protecting mother Hilsa.
Fishing in the river has been banned from midnight on October 3 to 25.
During this ban, each fisherman will get 25 kilograms of rice under the
Vulnerable Group Feeding (VGF), a social welfare programme of the government.
District Fisheries Officer Md Aminul Islam said a campaign is underway in the
river in coordination with the Fisheries Department, District-Upazila
Administrations, Police and Coast Guard teams to implement this ban.
This will continue for 22 days of the ban, he said, adding, "Even after that,
legal action will be taken against those who go to the river in violation of
the law."
Due to the ban, fishermen are spending their time now idly as the entire
river is now empty for fishing although there are 30 small and big fishing
ghats in the district.
There are 52,000 fishermen in this district who currently remain busy for
repairing their nets and boats on the river banks.
The government has banned all types of fishing in the Meghna River from
Alexander in Ramgati in Laxmipur to Shatanal area in Chandpur up to 100
kilometers.
During this time, all types of Hilsa conservation, harvesting,
transportation, marketing and storage are prohibited.
