RANGPUR, Oct 31, 2025 (BSS) – Farmers are ready for a bumper harvest of Aman rice this season as harvesting of the major cereal crop will gain momentum in the next couple of weeks in the Rangpur agricultural region.
They have already harvested short-duration Aman rice on 32,990 hectares of land and produced 1,07,112 tonnes of clean rice (1,60,668 tonnes in terms of paddy) till Thursday in the region.
"Farmers are getting an excellent average yield rate of 3.25 tonnes of clean rice (4.875 tonnes of paddy) per hectare of land," said Additional Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) for Rangpur region, Krishibid Md Sirajul Islam.
Farmers are getting the highest yield rate of short-term Aman rice now, predicting a bumper harvest in the region, where a huge amount of surplus rice is produced every year, ensuring national food security.
While visiting Aman rice fields in different areas of the Rangpur region in recent days, Sirajul Islam said that tender Aman rice plants got ample sunlight to grow superbly amidst frequent rainfall recently, resulting in an excellent crop yield.
The fields of ripe, semi-ripe, and growing Aman rice have now revealed a beautiful and captivating scene of nature in all five districts — Rangpur, Gaibandha, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, and Nilphamari — in the region.
“Recent rainfall worked as a tonic for growing Aman rice plants, helping them grow superbly,” he said, adding that farmers are expecting to get a super bumper production of the cereal crop.
Farmers are now getting 4.60 to 6.50 tonnes of Aman crop in terms of paddy per hectare of land from harvesting short-duration early varieties of the crop, as harvesting of other varieties will gain momentum within the next couple of weeks.
Earlier, the interim government through the DAE had fixed a target of producing 20,10,505 tonnes of clean Aman rice (30,15,757 tonnes in terms of paddy) from 6,20,430 hectares of land in the region.
Braving a drought-like situation during the initial seedling transplantation period, farmers have finally cultivated Aman rice on 6,21,505 hectares of land — 100.17 percent of the targeted area — in all five districts of the region.
Of them, short-duration varieties of Aman rice have been cultivated on over 62,000 hectares of land this season.
In addition to harvesting short-term Aman rice, farmers are cultivating early varieties of potatoes, mustard, vegetables, and other winter crops on the same land, creating huge jobs for farm laborers during the ‘seasonal lean period’ of the 'Aswin' and 'Kartik' months.
Talking to BSS, farmer Ariful Haque Batul of village Najirdigar in Rangpur said sharecroppers have cultivated varieties of Aman rice like BRRI dhan75, BRRI dhan51, BRRI dhan52, and BINA dhan17 on his eight acres of land this season.
“Harvesting of the crop will begin very soon. We are expecting high yield rates of the crop between 48 and 58 maunds (every 40 kg is one maund) per acre of land this time,” he hoped.
Farmers Manik Mian, Nur Hossain, Badiul Alam, Mostafizur Rahman, Babul Hossain, and Mofizar Rahman of Pirgachha, Sadar, Pirganj, and Badarganj upazilas of Rangpur said they are getting excellent yield rates from harvesting short-duration Aman rice.
Similarly, farmers Solaiman Ali, Nur Mohammad, Abul Hossain, and Mozahar Ali from different villages of Kawnia upazila of Rangpur said they are preparing to harvest their Aman rice crop to get a bumper harvest this season.
