
DHAKA, June 30, 2026 (BSS)-The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has arrested a drug trafficker with 60,000 yaba tablets while he was attempting to smuggle the drugs across the Ukhiya border of Cox's Bazar in guise of a fisherman.
Lieutenant Colonel Md. Zahirul Islam, Commanding Officer (CO) of the Ukhiya Battalion, disclosed the information in a press release issued today.
According to the release, acting on an intelligence information, a special patrol team from the Balukhali Border Outpost (BOP) took position yesterday afternoon at South Nolbonia, about 500 yards north of Border Pillar no-19.
At around 4:15 pm, BGB personnel spotted a man approaching Bangladesh from Myanmar disguised as a fisherman. They challenged him on suspicion, but he attempted to flee. After a brief chase, he was apprehended.
A search of his belongings led to the recovery of 60,000 yaba tablets concealed in six cartons strapped around his waist and hidden inside a fish basket.
The detainee was identified as 25-year-old Rashedul, a resident of Nolbunia village of Balukhali area under Ukhiya upazila.
During preliminary interrogation, he admitted that he had collected the yaba tablets from the Myanmar border and was bringing them into Bangladesh for sale at a higher price. He also confessed to having smuggled yaba across the border for a long time by concealing the tablets inside fishing nets and fish baskets, along with his associates.
Lieutenant Colonel Zahirul Islam said BGB had intensified its intelligence surveillance to identify drug trafficking networks and their collaborators and bring them to justice.
"Alongside ensuring border security, the BGB is carrying out its responsibilities with the highest level of professionalism to prevent drug trafficking and smuggling. Such operations will continue in the future," he said.
Legal proceedings against the detainee are currently underway.
