RANGPUR, Aug 5, 2026 (BSS) - Rangpur observed July Uprising Day 2026 today with solemn tributes to the martyrs and injured participants of the 2024 July uprising, alongside a renewed pledge to build a new Bangladesh.

The divisional and district administrations, Rangpur Metropolitan Police (RpMP), Rangpur Range Police, Rangpur City Corporation (RpCC), Rangpur Development Authority (RpDA), BNP and other political, social and cultural organisations organised daylong programmes to mark the occasion.

The observance began at 10 am with wreath-laying at the July Martyrs' Monument by Rangpur Divisional Commissioner Md Shahidul Islam. 

Tributes were later paid by Rangpur-3 MP Mahbubur Rahman Belal, RpCC Administrator Advocate Mahfuz Un Nabi Don, RpDA Chairman Md Shamsuzzaman Samu, Rangpur Range DIG Aminul Islam, RpMP Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Mabud, Zilla Parishad Administrator Md Saiful Islam, Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Ruhul Amin, Superintendent of Police Mohammad Mozammel Haque, the Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad, families of July martyrs and injured fighters and representatives of government offices, political parties, professional bodies and cultural organisations.

A reception for the families of July martyrs and injured July warriors was held at the District Shilpakala Academy Auditorium, followed by a discussion highlighting the significance of the day.

Presiding over the programme, Divisional Commissioner Md Shahidul Islam said the July uprising had strengthened the nation's resolve to build a new Bangladesh and inspired the government's ongoing reform initiatives. 

He said merit-based recruitment had been introduced and progress achieved in several sectors, while steps had also been taken to amend the Constitution to implement key reforms.

He urged all citizens to uphold national unity and social harmony by avoiding actions that could undermine family and social cohesion.

Special prayers were offered at mosques and other places of worship, while documentaries provided by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting were screened at auditoriums and public venues.

Museums under private and autonomous organisations remained open free of charge throughout the day, and children enjoyed free entry to government and private recreational facilities across the district.

Improved meals were served to inmates of government hospitals, jails, children's homes, rehabilitation centres, welfare institutions and shelters. Educational institutions also organised discussions, essay writing, recitation and painting competitions to highlight the significance of the day.

The programme concluded with prize distribution among competition winners and the presentation of gifts to the families of July martyrs and injured uprising participants. Government officials, July fighters, family members of the martyrs and journalists attended the event.
