NOAKHALI, Aug 16, 2026 (BSS) - A court here today sentenced three people to death and three others to life imprisonment in a case lodged over the murder of three people in Maijdee Bazar area in the district in 2016.

District Special Judge Shawkat Ali pronounced the verdict at noon. 

The death-row convicts are Omar Nasir Saju, 26, Omar Sharif Sultan, 22, sons of Quddus Ullah, and Sourav, 26, son of Faruk, all residents of the Maijdee Bazar area.

The three convicts sentenced to life imprisonment are Quddus Ullah, son of late Mafiz Ullah, Firoz Mahmud Bappi, son of Nurul Islam and Harunur Rashid Babul, son of Mohammad Ullah, all are the residents of the same area.

According to prosecution, on March 21, 2016, local youth Rajib, 23, went to a pond near Noakhali Government Old College to bathe a dog. He got into an argument and a scuffle with Sourav, a resident of Anantapur village, over the incident.

The dispute was reportedly supposed to be settled through a local arbitration meeting that evening.
Later that day, Rajib and his two friends, Wasim, 22, and Yasin, 23, arrived at the old campus of Noakhali Government College. The prosecution said the accused, including Saju, Sultan, Sourav, Quddus Ullah, Bappi and Babul, along with their associates, opened fire on them.

Rajib was killed at the scene, while Wasim and Yasin died several days later while undergoing treatment.

Rajib's mother, Kamrunnahar Begum, subsequently filed a murder case with Begumganj Police Station, naming eight people as accused.

Public Prosecutor of the court Tafaktar Hossain said the prosecution produced 19 witnesses to establish that the three victims were deliberately shot and killed near the old college.

After examining the evidence, the court convicted six accused, sentencing three to death and three to life imprisonment, while acquitting two others, he said.
