LONDON, March 13, 2025 (BSS/TASS) - Polish President Andrzej Duda calls on the United States to deploy nuclear weapons in the country, the Polish leader discussed this issue with US President Donald Trump's special envoy for Ukraine and Russia Keith Kellogg, the Financial Times reported.

In an interview with the newspaper, Duda said that he thought it was obvious that US President Donald Trump could move nuclear weapons from Western Europe or the United States to Poland. "The borders of NATO moved east in 1999, so 26 years later there should also be a shift of the NATO infrastructure east. For me this is obvious. I think it's not only that the time has come, but that it would be safer if those weapons were already here," Duda said.

The Polish president had already proposed a similar project to the Joe Biden administration in 2022, but the initiative failed then. According to the newspaper, the deployment of US nuclear weapons in Poland would be considered a serious threat by Russia.

Earlier, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that the country should seek access to nuclear and other non-conventional weapons, including through participation in the French nuclear umbrella initiative proposed by President Emmanuel Macron, amid attempts by European countries to increase their independence from the United States in security matters. Tusk and Duda represent Poland's rival political forces.

Poland will hold presidential elections in May. Duda has served two terms and cannot seek another, so the Law and Justice party he represents has nominated its leader, Karol Nawrocki, as its candidate.
