Country has over 14.50 lakh public employees, vacant posts over 4.68 lakh

DHAKA, April 1, 2026 (BSS) – State Minister for public administration Abdul Bari today said the country has a total of 14,50,891 government employees and 4,68,220 posts remain vacant while giving the latest government service position of the country.

The state minister said this while responding to a query made by treasury bench lawmaker Sheikh Rezaul Islam of Naogaon-6 during the question-answer session at the JatiyaSangsad Bhaban here.

Of the employed government service holders, the number of first class employees are 1,90,773 from grade one to nine while the vacant posts are 68,884, said the minister quoting the latest report on statistics of public servants 2024.

The second-class employees are 2,33,726 from grade 10 to 12 while the vacant posts are 1,29,166. The third class employees are 6,13,835 from 13th to 16th grade while the vacant posts are 1,46,799.

The fourth-class employees are 4,04,577 from grade 17 to 20 and vacant posts are 1,15,235 while the number of other employees are 7,980 and vacant posts are 8,136 who are enjoying consolidated pay working in contractual appointment in different ministries.

Regarding the dateline to fulfill the current vacant  posts in the government services, Bari said fulfill the vacant government post is a ongoing process, adding that the present government has taken a 180-days programme and all the ministries and departments have taken a plan to fulfill the vacant posts.

Replying to another question made by National Citizen Party (NCP) lawmaker Hasnat Abdullah of Cumilla-4 on the new pay scale of the public servants, the state minister said the matter is subject to the ministry of finance and the matter will be informed later if the concerned lawmaker gives notice on this matter.

The last government pay scale was formed in 2015 while there was no pay scale in the last eleven years, said the lawmaker.
