Explosion at steel mill in Shyampur injures 8 workers

DHAKA, Apr 1, 2026 (BSS) - An explosion during iron smelting at Dhaka Match Steel Mill in Shyampur area of the capital left eight workers injured this morning.

The incident occurred around 9:00 am while workers were engaged in smelting operations, police and factory sources said. 

The injured were identified as Md. Hira (35), Md. Manik (45), Md. Rajib Ali (29), Md. Arshad (45), Md. Khalilur Rahman (56), Md. Liton (32), Md. Matiur Rahman (22), and Md. Yusuf (20).

Following the blast, all victims were rescued and taken to the emergency department of the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery (NIBPS) around 11:00 am today.

According to Resident Physician Dr. Shawon Bin Rahman, all eight victims sustained burn injuries of varying severity. 

Md. Manik suffered the most critical injuries with 40 percent burns, followed by Md. Hira with 17 percent, he said. 

Arshad sustained 11 percent burns, Matiur 10 percent, Khalilur 9 percent, Liton 7 percent, Yusuf 5 percent, and Rajib 4 percent, he added.

Due to the severity of their conditions, Manik and Hira have been admitted to the hospital, while the remaining victims are under observation in the emergency department.

Authorities are yet to confirm the exact cause of the explosion.
