DHAKA, Apr 1, 2026 (BSS) - The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) today carried out an eviction drive in the Banani-Kakoli area clearing illegally occupied sidewalks and roads.

The operation conducted from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm on Wednesday, led by the Traffic Gulshan Division, resulted in fines totaling Taka 27,000 imposed on several hotels and business establishments through mobile courts.

During the drive, authorities found many businesses using sidewalks beyond their premises, placing cooking equipment, grill machines, furniture, and workshop tools.

These items were removed, and in some cases, illegal structures were demolished on the spot.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Gulshan Traffic Division Md. Mizanur Rahman emphasized that the main goal is awareness rather than punishment, noting that encroached sidewalks for pedestrians on roads, increasing accident risks.

He added that traders had been given a week's notice to clear the sidewalks.

Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Md. Ziaur Rahman said that regular drives will continue to keep sidewalks free from encroachment.

The campaign will continue, and stricter measures-including fines and possible imprisonment-will be enforced for repeat violations, he continued.
