SANGSAD BHABAN, April 28, 2026 (BSS) - Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed today
informed the Jatiya Sangsad that the government has taken various initiatives
to ensure the safety and security of fishing trawlers and fishermen operating
in the sea routes.

Salahuddin made the remarks while replying to a starred tabled question by
treasury bench lawmaker Sarwar Jamal Nizam (Chattogram-13) constituency
during the day's sitting in the House.

The minister said that the present government has undertaken a range of
measures to ensure security not only on land routes but also on waterways.

He added that riverine transport vessels, fishing trawlers, fishermen and
passengers are being protected through coordinated efforts of the river
Police and concerned district police units.

Highlighting the steps taken by law enforcement agencies to ensure safety of
fishing trawlers and fishermen at sea, the Home Minister said that the river
police are actively working to prevent crimes such as robbery, piracy, and
extortion on waterways, as well as to protect fisheries resources.

He further said that regular intelligence-based patrols are being conducted
to prevent all forms of criminal activities including piracy along the
waterways. "Routine drives and operations against riverine crimes remain
ongoing," he added.

The minister noted that those involved in criminal activities on waterways
are being arrested and brought under the law. "Surveillance and search
operations have been intensified in strategic locations,"

He also informed the Jatiya Sangsad that various initiatives have been taken
to enhance the operational capacity of the river police.

"Modern vessels, improved communication technology, and trained manpower are
being deployed to strengthen maritime security and ensure the safety of
fishing trawlers and fishermen at sea." He added.

In addition, awareness programmes for fishermen have also been undertaken to
improve safety practices and preparedness at sea, the minister added.
