Two get life term, six jailed for 10 yrs in Cumilla murder case

CUMILLA, July 29, 2025 (BSS) - A court here today sentenced two people to life imprisonment and six others to 10 years' rigorous imprisonment in a murder case that took place in Chauddagram upazila of the district in 2009.

Judge of Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-4 Sabbir Mahmud Chowdhury pronounced the verdict this afternoon, Additional Public Prosecutor (APP) Advocate Md Iftekhar Hossain confirmed.

The convicts who received life imprisonment are Mehedi Hasan alias Jamsed, 21, and Sahidul Islam alias Masud, 32.

The other convicts sentenced to 10 years in prison are Md Jasim Uddin Patwari, 32, Md Alauddin alias Tota, 28, Md Jamal Hossain Manik, 31, Md Ekramul Haque Milan, 41, Ibrahim alias Boro Mia, 45, and Md Shahabuddin, 38. All of them were absconding during the time of the verdict.

According to the prosecution, on May 16, 2009, shoe businessman Yusup Bhuiyan Tipu went out of his house around 2am when a group of robbers, who had been lying in wait, shot him and fled the scene.

Locals rescued Tipu and took him to a hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.

Following the incident, the victim's father Md Ali filed a murder case with Chauddagram Police Station against unidentified persons. Later, the accused were identified and arrested.

During investigation, four of the accused gave confessional statements under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. Police submitted the charge sheet on January 1, 2011.

After examining 16 witnesses and relevant evidence, the court found the eight accused guilty and handed down the verdict.

Out of the 17 total accused in the case, three-Taju, Ibrahim, and Abdul Razzak-died during the trial proceedings.

The court acquitted six other accused-Abul Hashem Bhuiyan alias Bhutu, Md Dulal, Faruk Hossain, Ilias Bhuiyan, Abul Kashem, and Saiful-as the charges against them were not proven beyond doubt, APP Iftekhar added.
