Youth gets life term for raping child in capital

DHAKA, April 29, 2026 (BSS) - A court here today convicted and sentenced one Sohan Alam Tapu to life imprisonment and fined him Taka three lakhs in a case lodged for raping a six-year-old child in 2023 in the city's Matuail area.
 
Judge Masrur Salekin of the Dhaka Children Violence Suppression Tribunal the judgment in the presence of the convict and sent him back to jail with a conviction warrant. It is the second judgment, from the recently constituted tribunal.
 
According to the case documents, the victim and her family came to the house of the convict for treatment of her sibling at the nearby Institute of Child & Mother Hospital. As the victim's mother was accompanying her sick child at the hospital, her grandmother took her to Tapu's house to get rest and have some food on May 8, 2023.
 
Tapu, however, took the child to his room in the night and raped her. When the victim told everything to her family, and her family members questioned him, he also threatened them with dire consequences. 

A family member filed the case with the Kadamtali Police Station, and police arrested Tapu on May 14, 2023. Police on December 26, 2023, filed the charge sheet against the sole accused.
