World leaders greet PM at Munich Security Conference

MUNICH, Germany, Feb 16, 2024 (BSS) - Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's presence at Munich Security Conference (MSC) 2024 has drawn huge attention among the world leaders and they greeted her for reelecting as the premier of Bangladesh.

"The presence of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has drawn huge attention among the world leaders. They (world leaders) greeted her (for reelection as Prime Minister) and she (Sheikh Hasina) has become the center of attention at the MSC," said Foreign Minister Dr. Hasan Mahmud while briefing reporters about the premier's busy activities at the first day of the conference.

Dr Hasan said that the premier has spent a busy day as she attended seven bilateral meetings and a pannel discussion at the MSC.

During the meetings with Denmark Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, and Qatar Premier and Foreign Minister Abdulrahman Al-Thani, Sheikh Hasina discussed the issues of Palestine and Rohingya as well as bilateral aspects.

The Premier had also meeting with Director General (DG) of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. At the meeting, WHO DG greeted Saima Wazed for being elected as Regional Director, saying Saima Wazed has been working with great enthusiasm.

Sheikh Hasina also attended a panel discussion titled "From Pocket to Planet: Scaling Up Climate Finance" at the MSC.

She also had talks with President of Global Affairs at Meta and former Deputy Prime Minister of the UK Sir Nick Clegg and Senior Managing Director, Development Policy and Partnership, World Bank, Axel Van Tortsenburge.

The World Bank has committed to provide $16 billion in 56 ongoing projects. The World Bank has also pledged to give $509 million in budgetary support to Bangladesh. In addition, the World Bank has recently pledged to support $ 700 million for Rohingya and poor people.

The foreign minister said that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina made a call to the World Bank to quickly disburse the budgetary support. The Prime Minister also thanked the World Bank for financing various projects in Bangladesh.

President of the Women Political Leaders Silvana Koch-Mehrin paid a call on Bangladesh Premier at the bilateral meeting room of the Place of Residence.

Among others, Foreign Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud and Senior Secretary of the ministry Masud Bin Momen were present during the meetings.

The Munich Security Conference 2024 is being held in German city of Munich on February 16-18.
