GAZIPUR, June 23, 2025 (BSS) - Home Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury today said the way the 'mob justice' was carried out during the arrest of former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda "is not acceptable."
"The incident involving CEC Nurul Huda is completely unacceptable in any manner. The attack on Nurul Huda was carried out in the presence of law enforcement personnel. If any member of the law enforcement agencies is found involved in the incident, legal action will be taken after investigation," he told reporters after visiting the Horticulture Centre in Mouchak, Kaliakair upazila of Gazipur district.
The Home Adviser urged everyone not to take the law into their own hands, insisting that people should hand over offenders to law enforcement agencies for appropriate legal action.
Former CEC Nurul Huda was arrested from his Uttara residence in the capital following a mob attack by some individuals around 7:30pm on Sunday, hours after a case was filed against him and 23 others, including ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and two other CECs-Kazi Rakib Uddin Ahmed and Kazi Habibul Awal-for alleged manipulation of the parliamentary elections in 2014, 2018, and 2024.
Regarding measures against illegal grabbing of agricultural land, Jahangir said they are going to enact a new law to protect arable land from illegal occupation.
Mentioning that many local varieties of fruits are disappearing, he called upon all to plant seeds of indigenous fruits in large numbers.
"So, everyone has to be cautious and plant more seeds of local varieties of fruits," he said.
Gazipur Deputy Commissioner Nafisa Arefin, Superintendent of Police Dr. Chowdhury Md. Jaber Sadeq, Kaliakair UNO Kawsar Ahmed, and Deputy Director of Mouchak Horticulture Centre Enamul Haque, among others, were present during the visit.
After visiting the Mouchak Horticulture Centre, the Home Adviser left for Tangail district, where he is scheduled to visit the Police Training Centre (PTC) and hold a meeting with law enforcement agencies and the local administration.
