RANGPUR, Nov 8, 2025 (BSS)- Managing Director of Bangladesh Journalist Welfare Trust (BJWT) and former BFUJ President Muhammad Abdullah has called upon the journalists to keep them above all partisan role for safeguarding their professional freedom and integrity.

“Ideology of a journalist might be same with the ruling party or any other political groups. But, journalists must keep standard, integrity and respect of their profession. A journalist should not be subservient to any government or political party,” he said.

Abdullah said this while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion titled 'What to do for the financial security and welfare of journalists and implementation of recommendations of the Media Reform Commission and the Journalist Protection Act” here today.

Rangpur Journalists' Union (RpUJ) and BJWR jointly organised the programme at Rangpur Town Hall auditorium. On the occasion he distributed cheques of the BJWT among 19 journalists.

Rangpur Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Rabiul Faisal presided over the event moderated by RpUJ General Secretary Sarkar Mazharul Mannan. RpUJ President Salequzzaman Salek and senior officials were present.

Abdullah recalled that Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman was the pioneer of freedom of speech as he regenerated media after the end of BAKSAL regime, which allowed only four newspapers to function.

“If he had not freed me from that situation, I would not become a journalist. So, I have a respect for him. As journalist we must have a little bit honesty to be respectful to him,” he noted

He expressed solidarity with the journalists' demands for the implementation of the recommendations of the Media Reform Commission before announcement of the schedule of the forthcoming national election.

The issue of bringing the senior journalists under the purview of grants will clarified in the next few days, he said adding that the issue of granting scholarships for children of journalists will also be resolved, he added.
