RANGPUR, July 16, 2025 (BSS) - Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs and Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Adviser Professor Dr Asif Nazrul has said the interim government will ensure globally acceptable trials of the July massacre.

“We want to set an example by conducting trials that will be acceptable to the whole world. We are hopeful that everyone will see the trial of the martyred Abu Sayeed murder case during the tenure of the interim government,” he said.

He said this at a discussion organized at the Independence Memorial Square of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) to mark the first martyrdom anniversary of Abu Sayeed and 'July Martyrs' Day 2025' on Wednesday as a guest of honor.

With BRUR Vice-chancellor Professor Dr Md Showkat Ali in the chair, Md Mokbul Hossain, father of martyred Abu Sayeed, attended the event as the chief guest.

Relatives, including widows and parents of the 22 martyred families of Rangpur, were present as special guests.

Adviser to the Ministry of Water Resources and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Syeda Rizwana Hasan attended the event as guest of honor.

In addition, UGC Chairman professor Dr SMA Fayez, its member Professor Dr Tanzimuddin Khan and Senior Secretary to the Ministry of Education Siddique Jobayer were also present as guests of honor.

Professor Asif Nazrul said that the trial of the martyred Abu Sayeed murder case is progressing at full speed at the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) and his killers will be tried during the interim government's term.

He said, “The head of the previous fascist regime, Sheikh Hasina, used to talk about her father's death in words. Even then, it took three and a half years to try her father's murder although we have not come to try it like Sheikh Hasina’s regime.”

"We want to set an example by conducting acceptable world standard trials,” he said.

Professor Asif Nazrul said that Abu Sayeed embraced martyrdom on July 16, 2024.

“But, I did not see the martyrdom video of Abu Sayed that day. I saw it the next day, July 17, in the afternoon. Who could die with his arms outstretched and his chest raised embracing death like Abu Sayeed?” he said.

He said, "I could not sit still as a guardian after watching the video of Abu Sayeed's death. I felt that we no longer have the right to be afraid. The right to protest has been created. Abu Sayeed's ideals were truth and justice. He was ready for death."

The Adviser said, over the ages, many people have died in many ways in democratic movements. But no one has died like Abu Sayeed.

“Hundreds of young people have sacrificed themselves after seeing and knowing the video of Abu Sayeed’s heroic martyrdom,” he said.

Asif Nazrul said although Rangpur is neglected, the people of this region are simple. According to the constitution, balanced development across the country is a constitutional right.

“That’s why the Chief Adviser has a plan to build a state-of-the-art health city around a specialized hospital in Nilphamari. People should not go to Singapore for treatment, but go to the Rangpur region,” he said.

Earlier, Vice-chancellor Professor Dr Md Showkat Ali with the teachers and officials of the university visited the grave of martyr Abu Sayeed and paid respects in Babanpur village in the morning.

At that time, the silence around the grave of martyr Abu Sayeed was broken by tears, grief and respect since dawn.

His parents, teachers, classmates, administration officials, political leaders and university administration officials and employees stood at the grave of martyr Abu Sayeed with flowers in their hands.

After returning to the university campus, they wore black badges and brought out a mourning rally with participation of thousands of students of the university, teachers, officials and employees.

Later, the two advisers with other guests laid the foundation stones of a Street Memory Stamp, martyred Abu Sayeed Gate and Museum and martyred Abu Sayeed Memorial Monument at the campus.

A drawing competition, a dua and milad mehfil were arranged in the afternoon.

The BNP, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Islami Chhatra Shibir, Chhatra Dal, NCP, AB Party, Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, Democratic Student Parliament and various political, social, cultural and professional leaders and students' organizations offered prayers and paid due respect to this great hero of the July Movement.
