DHAKA, Oct 30, 2025 (BSS) - Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has called upon the young generation to nurture their understanding of policymaking as a continuous and adaptive process, emphasizing that the success or failure of any venture largely depends on the quality of its policy framework.
The Chief Adviser made the remarks while exchanging greetings with the winning students of the National Policy Competition 2025, organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, at the State Guest House Jamuna here this evening.
The winners from nine universities and one medical college across the country also interacted with the Chief Adviser and shared their experiences from the competition and presented their policy proposals.
Professor Yunus congratulated the winners, noting that their achievement reflected rigorous competition and intellectual excellence.
"You are sitting in the Cabinet Room -- the very place where the highest-level policy discussions and decisions take place. Today you are engaging in simulated debates, but someday you may sit in this same room as real policymakers," he said.
The Chief Adviser underscored the importance of sound policy formulation, saying that even the best projects with vast budgets and manpower could fail due to flawed policies.
"If the policy is right, everything else aligns and succeeds. But a wrong policy can ruin all efforts," Yunus said.
The Chief Adviser explained policy is not static but must evolve with changing circumstances.
"Policies should be adjusted to remain relevant. A policy made once cannot stay effective forever if the world around it changes," he said, urging students to view policymaking as both a professional and personal exercise guiding their goals in life.
Drawing parallels between national and personal decision-making, the Chief Adviser said, "Just as governments and businesses need policies, individuals also need their own policies to reach their goals. The key is flexibility to modify one's direction as situations evolve."
Professor Yunus lauded the initiative of the Ministry of Youth and Sports for organizing the competition, describing it as a valuable exercise in leadership and civic responsibility.
"This is not a meaningless event; it is a very significant exercise. When you eventually take real policy decisions, these experiences will help you act wisely," he said.
He also praised all participants -- not just the winners -- for contributing to the competition's quality and urged future contestants to learn from the experiences of their predecessors.
"Keep practicing, debating, and analyzing policies. As citizens and owners of the country, it is your duty to stay alert and raise your voice when policies go wrong," Professor Yunus concluded.
Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain and Chief Adviser's Special Envoy Lutfey Siddiqi were present at the event, among others.
The National Policy Competition 2025 was successfully completed at nine universities and one medical college nationwide, with one winning team selected from each institution.
The winners were from East West University, University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB), Chittagong University, Jahangirnagar University, Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka University, North South University, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Rajshahi University, and Shahjalal University of Science and Technology.
