
DHAKA, Dec 16, 2025 (BSS) - Marking the Great Victory Day, leaders, activists and citizens thronged the grave of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) founder Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital to pay their homage.
From early morning, BNP central leaders, activists, members of affiliated and associate bodies, along with ordinary people, arrived in processions at the mausoleum to offer their respects.
Around 9:30 am, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Standing Committee members Mirza Abbas, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, Nazrul Islam Khan and Salahuddin Ahmed, former Chhatradal President Abdul Kader Bhuiyan Jewel, among other senior BNP leaders, paid floral tributes at the grave.
Later, separate processions with banners arrived on behalf of various associate organisations, including Dhaka City South BNP, Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal, Jatiyatabadi Tanti Dal, Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Arafat Rahman Koko Krira Parishad, Jatiyatabadi Textile Engineers Association of Bangladesh (JTEB), Rampura Thana BNP, Badda Thana BNP, Dakshinkhan Thana BNP, Bangshal Thana BNP, Mirpur Thana BNP, Shyampur Thana BNP, Hazaribagh Thana BNP, Kalabagan Thana BNP, Kamrangirchar Thana BNP, Banani Thana BNP, Khilkhet Thana BNP and New Market Thana BNP.
Common people were also seen paying homage. After paying tributes, special prayers were offered for Ziaur Rahman.
After the homage, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the war that began with the proclamation of independence by Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman culminated in final victory on December 16 and that is why, the day is extremely significant to them.
He said they had come to the grave of their party founder and the proclaimer of independence, Ziaur Rahman, along with members of the party's Standing Committee, to pay tribute to him.
Mirza Fakhrul said they took a vow at the mausoleum to continue their struggle to keep the country's independence intact.
On this day, he said, on behalf of BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, they paid tribute to those who were martyred in the Great War of Liberation and paid homage to the proclaimer of independence, Ziaur Rahman.
He said they also prayed to Almighty Allah for the recovery of Khaleda Zia, the country's first woman freedom fighter and a vigilant guardian of democracy.
The BNP Secretary General said Tarique Rahman would return home on December 25 and they were working so that his return would further accelerate the struggle for democracy.
He said those who had stood against independence were now trying to raise their heads, but the independence-loving people of Bangladesh would foil all conspiracies and surely keep the country's independence and culture intact and establish democracy, Insha'Allah.
