DHAKA, Mar 25, 2026 (BSS) - President Mohammed Shahabuddin and his spouse Dr Rebeka Sultana will host a reception at Bangabhaban tomorrow, marking the 56th Independence and National Day.

"Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to attend the event at the green lawns of the Bangabhaban, the presidential palace, in the afternoon," said a spokesman familiar with the matter.

"Cabinet members, political leaders, ambassadors and high commissioners of different countries, Supreme Court judges, chiefs of the three services, members of parliament, academics, business community leaders, artistes, valiant Freedom Fighters and family members of Birshreshtha gallantry award recipients and distinguished citizens will also attend the function," he added.

Every year, March 26 brings a tragic reminder of history's blackest episode that heralded a bloody nine-month ordeal beginning on the night of March 25, 1971, which ultimately led to the long-cherished independence on December 16 the same year at the cost of a sea of blood.

On the occasion, the President and Prime Minister will also cut a cake. They will exchange greetings with wounded freedom fighters and other dignitaries and guests at the function.

A cultural programme followed by light refreshments will also be held on the occasion.
