DHAKA, April 21, 2026 (BSS) - The government has undertaken elaborate programmes to observe the 165th birth anniversary of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore and the 127th birth anniversary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam at the national level with due respect.

The Ministry of Cultural Affairs has formed a national committee in this regard and held a preparatory meeting, where decisions were taken to organise elaborate programmes at locations associated with the lives of both poets.

The main national programme marking Tagore's birth anniversary will be held on May 8, 2026 (25 Boishakh 1433) in Kushtia, a district closely associated with the poet's memory.

In addition, Rabindra fairs, discussion and cultural programmes will be organised by local administrations in Shahjadpur of Sirajganj, Patisar of Naogaon and Dakkhindihi and Pithabhog of Khulna.

On the occasion, commemorative publications and posters will be published, while a special exhibition of Tagore's paintings will be arranged at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.

The 127th birth anniversary of Kazi Nazrul Islam will be observed on May 25, 2026 (11 Jaistha 1433) with the main national programme in Trishal of Mymensingh, where the Prime Minister is expected to attend as chief guest.

Similar programmes, including Nazrul fairs and discussion sessions, will be held in Doulatpur of Cumilla, Teota of Manikganj, Karpasdanga of Chuadanga and Chattogram.

To inspire the younger generation, the Nazrul Institute and the Department of Public Libraries will organise book and photo exhibitions highlighting the poet's life and works.

Educational institutions across the country will also arrange discussions, essay writing and recitation competitions on the occasion.

The programmes will be broadcast live on Bangladesh Television, Bangladesh Betar and private media outlets.

Diplomatic missions abroad will also observe the events, while security arrangements will be ensured by the Ministry of Home Affairs and law enforcement agencies.
