DHAKA, Jan 2, 2024 (BSS) - The Election Commission (EC) has cancelled the candidature of independent candidate in Lakshmipur-1 constituency Mohammad Habibur Rahman Paban for violating the electoral code of conduct.

The EC issued a letter to Paban, a presidium member of Jubo League, this afternoon informing him about the cancellation of his candidacy.

It is the first instance of scrapping candidacy of any candidate contesting in the 12th Jatiya Sangsad (JS) elections, slated for January 7, over breaching polls code.

In the letter issued to Paban, the EC mentioned, "On December 30, Mohammad Habibur Rahman Paban, an independent candidate of Lakshmipur-1 constituency, made indecent and objectionable remarks to Lakshmipur deputy commissioner and the concerned returning officer through a WhatsApp call".

After the incident, the deputy commissioner and the concerned returning officer sent a letter to the EC Secretariat requesting to take legal action against Paban alleging that he threatened to take various measures, including transferring the returning officer and the superintendent of police within three days.

Subsequently, a letter was sent to the candidate to appear in person at the EC Secretariat on Monday (January 1) to explain his position.

Finally, the EC took the decision regarding Paban's candidacy after holding a hearing on Monday where he appeared in person.

During the hearing, it was proved that Paban violated the electoral code of conduct and committed "pre-election irregularities" and election crimes.
