MANCHESTER, United States, Jan 23, 2024 (BSS/AFP) - A robocall impersonation of US President Joe Biden appearing to urge people to not cast ballots in the New Hampshire primary is being investigated as attempted voter suppression, the state's attorney general said Monday.
The fake phone message sounds like the Democrat telling voters that "it's important that you save your vote for the November election."
"Voting this Tuesday only enables the Republicans in their quest to elect Donald Trump again. Your vote makes a difference in November, not this Tuesday," the voice adds.
The message opens with "what a bunch of malarkey" -- a favorite phrase of the president's.
The New Hampshire attorney general's office announced an investigation had been launched, saying the call "appears to be artificially generated."
"These messages appear to be an unlawful attempt to disrupt the New Hampshire Presidential Primary Election and to suppress New Hampshire voters," it added in a statement.
Biden campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez said the campaign was considering further action over the fake robocall.
"Spreading disinformation to suppress voting and deliberately undermine free and fair elections will not stand," she said.
