Dr Harun president, Dr Siddiqur GS of Asiatic Society council

DHAKA, Jan 31, 2024 (BSS) - Former vice-chancellor of National University Professor Dr Harun Or Rashid was elected president and Dr Mohammad Siddiqur Rahman Khan general secretary of the Council of the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh.

"Muldhara" panel led by Dr Harun and Dr Siddiqur swept the January 30 election, bagging 13 of the total 17 posts. Dhaka University Department of Islamic History & Culture professor Dr Mohammad Siddiqur Rahman Khan was general secretary in the last council as well.

The other winning candidates from Muldhara panel are- vice presidents Prof Dr Hafiza Khatun, Prof Dr Sajahan Miah and Prof Dr Yarul Kabir, secretary Prof dr Md Abdur Rahim, treasurer Dr Mohammad Abdul Mazid, members Prof Dr Mahbuba Nasrin, Prof Md Lutfur Rahman, Prof Dr Asha Islam Nayeem, Prof Dr Abdul Basir, Prof Dr Nazma Khan Majlish and Prof Dr Sabbir Ahmed.

Meanwhile, "Muktobuddhi Chorcha" panel candidates Prof Dr AKM Golam Rabbani, Prof Dr Sadeqa Halim, Prof Dr Md Abdul Karim and Prof Dr Shuchita Sharmin won the other four seats.

A total of 824 voters from the total 1300 casted their ballots at the election.

The Council of the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh is its highest body. The Society is run by its own statutes and is administered by an Executive Council elected once every two years.
