SANGSAD BHABAN, Feb 5, 2024 (BSS)-Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq today said the fixation of exact time limit for submitting the investigation report of the most sensational Sagar-Runi murder case is not possible.

“It is impossible to fix the exact time-frame of the probe report of Sagar-Runi murder case”, said the minister on behalf of the Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan while responding to a supplementary question raised by opposition Jatiya Party lawmaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed of Thakurgaon-3 during the question-answer session with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.

The minister, however, assured that while the timeframe of the proper investigation of the murder case is not at all confirmed but the investigation agency will properly investigate the matter as the real perpetrators could be identified.

Even though 11 years have gone by, no headway has been made in cracking the mystery behind the double murder, currently being investigated by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).

After the journalist couple was killed on the night on February 10 in 2012, then Home Minister Sahara Khatun had vowed to catch the killers within 48 hours.

But over the decade, the investigation officer was changed six times, and the RAB and other agencies have taken 95 dates from the court to complete the probe. But they have not been able to submit the probe report.

Sagar Sarwar, news editor at private TV channel Maasranga, and Meherun Runi, a senior reporter at ATN Bangla, were killed in the early hours of February 11, 2012, at their rented flat in the capital's West Rajabazar.

The couple's only child Mahir Sarwar Megh, only five at the time, was in the flat.
Nousher Ali Roman, brother of Runi, filed a case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station on the following day.

Police arrested Tanvir Rahman in connection with the murder case on October 1, 2012. Later, he secured bail in 2014.

Law enforcers have so far arrested eight people, including Tanvir, in connection with the murder case.

The seven other suspects are- Rafiqul Islam, Bakul Mia, Abu Syed, Mintu alias Baggira Mintu alias Masum Mintu, Quamrul Hasan alias Arun, security guard Enam Ahmed alias Humayun Kabir and Palash Rudra Pal.
