Bangladesh achieves self-sufficiency in food: Shirin

DHAKA, Feb 17, 2024 (BSS) - Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury today said Bangladesh has achieved self-sufficiency in food as the government has taken various effective initiatives and used different modern technologies.

"Bangladesh is one of agriculture based countries and the farmers are the main wheels of agriculture based economy. The food deficit Bangladesh now becomes a food surplus one due to the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina," she said.

The Speaker said this while inaugurating exhibition of family nutrition garden organized by Pirgangj Upazila Parishad and Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) at the upazila auditorium.

Shirin said modernization of agriculture should be carried forward by utilizing the knowledge of modern technology. Integrated agriculture should be encouraged by imparting training in modern agriculture under the initiative of agriculture department, she said.

The speaker also urged the concerned authority to take necessary steps in reducing discrimination to the women farmers.

Later, the Speaker distributed seeds of different vegetables among 403 beneficiaries.

Upazila Agriculture Officer Sadequzzaman Sarder addressed the inaugural function while Pirganj municipality mayor ASM Tazimul Islam conducted it.

Later, Shirin distributed winter cloths among the distressed of three unions of Pirganj upazila on Shanerhat Dimukhi High School ground.

Speaker's husband Syed Ishtiaq Hossain, Pirganj municipality mayor ASM Tazimul Islam Shamim, Pirganj upazila chairman Nur Md Mandol, Awami League Pirganj upazila unit acting president Nurul Amin Raza, vice president Mokbul Hossain Sarder and UNO Md Iqbal Hasan, among others, were present in the programme.
