DHAKA, March 16, 2024 (BSS)-Jagannath University (JnU) authorities today suspended management studies department assistant professor Deen Islam and law department student Raihan Siddique Amman from the university following the death of law department student Fairuz Abontika.

Earlier, Deen Islam was removed from the post of assistant proctor of the university.

The university took these steps amid protests by the students who alleged that Abontika committed suicide as she was sexually harassed by Raihan Siddique Amman, said JnU Proctor Mohammad Jahangir Hossain.

Our Cumilla Correspondent reported that the body of Abontika was found hanging from the ceiling of her room in her parents' house in Bagichagaon area of Cumilla.

Doctors declared her dead when family members took her to Cumilla Medical College Hospital on Friday, Officer-in-Charge of Kotwali Model Police Station Firoz Hossain told the media at around 10:00am.

Her classmates claimed that Abontika wrote on Facebook that the law department student Raihan Siddique Amman had sexually harassed her and when she informed it to assistant proctor Deen Islam, he verbally abused her instead of taking action against Raihan.

A five-member probe body led by JnU teachers’ association president Professor Jakir Hossain has been formed to investigate into the matter.

The body was asked to submit the investigation report as soon as possible, said the proctor.

“We have taken the maximum steps as per the university rules in this regard. We will cooperate if her family files case,” the proctor added.
