Selina pioneers women empowerment by agriculture in Narsingdhi

 
DHAKA, March 23, 2024 (BSS) - Selina Jahan pioneers women empowerment by agriculture in Narsingdi. Once she endured huge economic hardship to run her family, but now she has brought happiness to many women’s life by giving them opportunity to work in her organic agriculture and earn a handsome income.
 
Selina went through financial crisis in her early life. Once she had a wrinkle on her forehead to run her family. She always used to be tensed how to pass a day without any income. But, now, she is a woman farmer-cum-entrepreneur of Narsingdi district.
 
Now, many women are working with her and she has brought happiness to many women’s life by giving them opportunity to work with a handsome income.
 
Selina set an example establishing a healthy and organic agriculture through using organic fertilizers in Shoikarchar village of Shibpur upazila in the district.
 
She brought out women of home to land. She inspired many women towards agriculture and involved them with diverse agriculture and make them self-reliant. She also encouraged the rural women to produce vermin-compost for organic farming.
 
Selina said she and her organization Grameen Krishak Daridra Bimochan Atmakallyan Sangstha started organic agriculture in 2007 with the assistance of the then Deputy Commissioner Amrita Baroi.
 
She brought out the unemployed rural women of home to lands and engaged them in producing Vermin compost for organic vegetables.
 
She said at present she cultivated organic vegetables and paddy on 25 bighas of land, getting excellent income from agriculture.
 
Selina also started poultry farming and Turkey bird farming at Joynagor union of the same upazila in Narsingdi district in 2015.
 
Currently, there are over 10 thousands chickens and 700 Turkey bird in two farms.
 
She said women participation in agriculture and poultry sector has been contributing to poverty alleviation, meeting nutritional demand of people and also helping women to be financially well-off.
 
Selina Jahan, the pioneer of women empowerment, received Bangabandhu Jatiya Krishi Purasker from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
