DHAKA, Mar 31, 2024 (BSS) - The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), an autonomous public body working with people’s rights, handed over its 'Annual Report 2023' to President Mohammed Shahabuddin at Bangabhaban here today.
A 10-member delegation led by NHRC chairman Dr Kamal Uddin Ahmed handed over the report to the President. The other delegation members include Md Selim Reza, Md Aminul Islam, Kongjari Chowdhury, Dr Biswajit Chandra, Dr Tania Haque and Advocate Kawsar Ahmed.
Later, President's Secretary Md Joynal Abedin briefed the journalists.
The President said human rights is constitutional rights of people and the main responsibility of the NHRC is to ensure people’s rights in the country.
He said the NHRC should work with the goal by taking effective role whenever human rights violations occur in any part of Bangladesh.
The Head of State said many incidents of human rights violations, including child marriage, occur across the country, which subsequently lead to a debacle-like situation.
He directed the NHRC to take necessary measures, including creating mass awareness to stop these sorts of activities.
Expressing his satisfaction over the activities of the commission, the President urged the NHRC delegation to continue its activities to protect human rights.
The President, during the meeting, was apprised by the NHRC chairman of the various activities, including the assistance and measures untaken by the present commission.
Secretaries concerned to the Bangabhaban were present.
