Five transport extortionists held in city

DHAKA, May 5, 2024 (BSS) - Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) today
arrested five transport extortionists from Demra and south Keraniganj areas
in the city.

The arrested were identified Md. Chan Mia, 40, Md. Liton, 50, Md. Sumon, 42,
Sonjit Chandra Das, 38, and Md. Al Amin, 22, said MJ Sohel, assistant
superintendent of police (ASP) and assistant director (Media) of RAB-10.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of the RAB-10 conducted separate drives in Demra
and south Keraniganj areas in the capital and nabbed them around 11.30 am, he
added.

ASP Sohel further said that the extortionists were illegally collecting money
from various transports including inter-district trucks, covered-vans,
lorries and CNG-run auto-rickshaws.

The RAB also recovered extortion money worth Taka 7,200 and four wooden
sticks from their possession, he said, adding: "Necessary legal action has
been taken against them and they have been handed over to respective police
