Local Govt (UP) Bill, 2024 placed in JS

JATIYA SANGSAD BHABAN, May 5, 2024 (BSS) – LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Md Tajul Islam today placed Local Government (Union Parishad) (Amendment) Bill, 2024 in the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) aimed at strengthening local government institutions financially, identify ways to reduce dependence on public allocations and make the Union Parishad Bill more modern and service-oriented.
 
According to the bill details, the chairmen and members of the Union Parishads will get honorarium fixed by the government during their tenure.
 
“Through this, there will be no legal complications regarding payment of allowance to any Union Parishad chairman or member who are suspended,” the minister told the House.
 
Tajul said the government will appoint a competent officer or a person as an administrator for the purpose of performing functions after the expiration of the tenure of the council according to the provisions of this law.
 
The administrator will perform all duties of the union council until an elected council is formed. As a result, even after the expiration of the term of the Union Parishad, the tendency to prevent or postpone the election can be controlled by litigation.
 
According to the Local Government (Union Councils) Bill, 2009 (Bill No. 61 of 2009), 4,579 Union Parisad are run.
 
Deputy Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Shamsul Haque Tuku, further examined the bill and sent it to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the concerned ministry to submit a report in seven days.
