Police constable killed, over 50 injured in Khulna clashes

KHULNA, Aug 2, 2024 (BSS) - A police constable was killed and over 50 including 20 cops, students, pedestrians and common people, were injured during fierce clashes between police, quota reforms movement students and banned Jamaat-Shibir men here today.

"The deceased was Constable Suman Gharamy," Commissioner of Khulna Metropolitan Police Md Mozammel Haque told journalists around 9.00pm.

Most of the injured were admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH), while the rest injured were admitted to different private hospitals, including Khulna City Hospital and Police Line Hospital.

Earlier, chase, counter chase and clashes were erupted between police and anti-quota reforms movement students and banned Jamaat-Shibir men from afternoon to evening at city's zero point, in front of KU campus, Gallamary, Sher-e-Bangla Road and Moylapota area, said a KMP press release tonight.

Police interrupted their procession while the agitators swopped on cops at zero point and Gallamry area with sticks, iron rods and brick-bats, said the press release.

The banned Jamaat-Shibir men, according to the release, in the guise of students also fired at police. The cops also retaliated the attackers with sound grenade, rubber bullets and charged baton to save them.

At one stage the attackers' set fire to a police car and vandalized Gallamary police outpost and many public establishments. During the clash, Suman Gharamy including 25 cops were fatally injured and rushed to the KMCH where duty doctor declared him dead.

Talking to BSS tonight, KMP commissioner Md Mozammel Haque said, at least 20 to 25 cops were injured during the clash.
