DHAKA, Aug 14, 2024 (BSS)- Five women in Jhenaigati Upazila of Sherpur district have created examples of success in various fields keeping their contribution to the society and the wellbeing of the people.
 
The women have achieved the "Joyeeta Award-2023" as recognition of their outstanding achievements in different fields by overcoming difficulties and challenges.  
 
The five successful women are -- Sheuly Begum, Trisna Agata Mrong, Rokeya Khatun, Zakia Begum, and Mamataj Begum.
 
Sheuly Begum’s father was a poor man. She tied the knot with a wood seller. Her husband was not capable of running their family. They didn't have plenty of food all the time. Even they had no social status for their poor condition.   
 
In 2013, Sheuly Begum was informed about the making of organic fertilizer from earthworms through non-government development organizations--Caritas and World Vision Bangladesh.
 
Sheuli’s  produced organic fertilizer spread in the field of Jhenaigati Upazila and  gradually became popular among all farmers. They started to buy organic fertilizer at low cost and produce more crops without giving any chemical  fertilizer on their agricultural land. Currently, she is self-reliant and earns enough money to run her family smoothly. Twenty-five women of her village now follow her and produce organic fertilizer from earthworms.
 
About her success, Sheuly Begum said, "Once I had no status in society. Now I am a self-dependent woman selling earthworm fertilizer. This job has glorified me in society. I like and respect my work which brings smiles to another 25 women in my village like me."
 
Trisna Agata Mrong’s  parents of  were day labourers. She completed the degree pass course despite various obstacles including the financial crisis. She was married  to another poor man. But her husband was cooperative and helped her in every work. Trisna completed her MSS degree with the help of her husband. Now she is teaching at a private educational institution with reputation.
 
"I have suffered a lot to make my dream true by completing study from a poor family. I have been conferred with the Joyeeta Award for my contribution to the education field. I am very happy that the government has acknowledged my contribution.                           
 
 Rokeya Khatun was the victim of child marriage when she was a student of class six. Her husband is a primary school teacher and a freedom fighter. She is also a teacher. Her daughter is teaching at a government primary school and her son is working as assistant commissioner and executive magistrate. She is a successful woman and got recognition as a successful mother.
 
"It is my best achievement that I have been honoured as the best successful mother."        
 
Zakia's husband divorced her 15 years ago. She was the victim of family torture. Zakia has been staying at her father's house with her only child after her divorce. She established herself in society as a self-reliable woman.   
 
About her success, Zakia said, "The Joyeeta Award is inspiring women to contribute more to society. All deprived and destitute women will be encouraged to show their talent and work to establish themselves in the society."      
 
Mamataj Begum is not from a well-off family. But she always stands by the helpless and poor people. She has engaged herself in various social works including stopping child marriage, counseling the poor women and other social services.  
 
"I have been working to accelerate women's development, women's employment, women empowerment, reducing gender discrimination and removing poverty. These works have helped me to become a successful lady in society," said Mamataj.
