Workshop for journalists on hypertension held

DHAKA, Oct 5, 2024 (BSS) - A virtual workshop for journalists on "Hypertension Control in Bangladesh: Progress and Way Forward" today underscored the necessity of effectively addressing hypertension as it could prevent heart attacks and strokes of people.

It also emphasised ensuring the availability of anti-hypertensive medicine at the grassroots along with increased allocation as the prevalence of hypertension is increasing significantly in Bangladesh.

The workshop was organised by research and advocacy organisation PROGGA (Knowledge for Progress) with support from Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI), said a press release.

A total of 26 journalists from Sylhet division working in print, electronic, and online media outlets participated in the workshop.

At the workshop, it was said that one in every four adults in Bangladesh suffers from hypertension and it is one of the major risk factors for various non-communicable diseases including heart diseases, stroke, cancer, kidney diseases, respiratory diseases and diabetes.

In addition, hypertension is one of the three major reasons for death and disability in Bangladesh.

ABM Zubair, Executive Director of PROGGA took part as discussant, while PROGGA's Director Md. Shahedul Alam and Coordinator Sadia Galiba Prova delivered presentations on hypertension control.
