Lawsuit against 391 AL, BCL leaders over attack on DU campus  

DHAKA, Oct 21, 2024 (BSS)- A criminal case has been filed against 391 Awami League and Chhatra League leaders including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina with Shahbag police station in connection with the indiscriminate attacks on agitating students at Dhaka University (DU) campus on July 15 last.

Around 800-1000 unidentified persons were also accused in the case filed today by Mahin Sarkar, a coordinator of the Anti Discrimination Student Movement, who was also came under attack on that day by BCL men.     

“The case has been filed to bring the attackers to book. As student representatives, it’s our responsibility to go for legal procedure against the persons who carried out the heinous attacks,” plaintiff Mahin told a press briefing in front of Shahbag police station after lodging the case this evening.
     
Key accused of the case are: AL president Sheikh Hasina, AL general secretary Obaidul Quader, former education minister Mohibul Hassan Chowdhury Nowfel, former information and broadcasting minister Mohammad A. Arafat, Jubo league president Mainul Hossain khan Nikhil, online activist Nijhoom Majumder, BCL president Saddam Hussein, general secretary Sheikh Wali Asif Enan, DU BCL president Mazharul Kabir Shayon and general secretary Tanbir Hasan Shaikat.

Terming July 15 as a black day for Dhaka University, Mahin said, BCL and other affiliated bodies of Awami League carried out an open attack on thousands of students wielding local weapons, leaving a number of male and female students seriously injured.

“BCL leaders and supporters threatened me and attempted to kill me. I was injured too,” Mahin mentioned in the complaint.

Case will be filed over every attacks carried out by BCL activists across the country, said another coordinator Abdul Hannan Masud in the press conference.

Masud demanded prohibiting Chhatra league immediately as a terrorist organization and bring all the terrorists of Chhatra League to book for their crimes, saying, “None of them will further get the opportunity to carry out terrorist activities on the soil of the country.”

He urged the students to file cases against the culprits involved in countrywide attacks on students, adding, “Awami League has lost all the grounds of doing politics in the country. They do not have any right to breathe in free air. They only deserve to breathe in the air of prison.”    

Masud Alam, deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Ramna Zone said, names of more than 300 hundred persons were given in the case filed for the attacks on students on July 15 at DU campus. 

We will take action after necessary investigation, he said.

Among the coordinators, Abdul Kader, Rokib Rana Masud and Nishita Zaman Niha were present during the press conference.
